3.25 Hr(s) HCSSA Administrator/Alternate
Summary: Guidelines of coding applied to the pediatric population; impact on billing & coding practices.
HCSSA Topic(s) Addressed:
§558.260[a]basic principles of management in a licensed health-related setting
The transition from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM coding is underway and the impact is huge for the entire medical community.
Anyone who is held to HIPPA (Health Information Privacy & Portability Act), not just those who bill Medicare and Medicaid, will be impacted.
We are all required to follow the Coding Guidelines that incorporate coding conventions,
general guidelines, and chapter-specific guidelines. All chapters will be used for coding pediatric patients; however,
we will see some of these patients frequently coded from Chapter 16 (Certain Conditions Originating in the Perinatal Period — P00-P96) and
Chapter 17 (Congenital Malformation, Deformation, and Chromosomal Abnormalities — Q00-Q99).
This program reviews guidelines of coding and applies them to the pediatric population and
addresses the impact that this change will have in billing and coding practices. It is recommended that Viewers have a basic
understanding of ICD-9 coding and have access to an ICD-10-CM book to work through pediatric-specific
scenarios. Presentation Date: 11.18.2015
Program Objectives: Upon completion of this program, the viewer will be able to:
Identify 3 reasons to transition to ICD-10-CM.
Identify 4 ICD-10-CM coding conventions.
Identify 4 ICD-10-CM coding guidelines.
Demonstrate completion of a minimum of 3 coding scenarios using correct ICD-10-CM codes.
