Contracting with MCOs: Benefit vs. Pitfalls

[2974] Contracting with MCOs: Benefit vs, Pitfalls Education-Training Credits: 1.0 Hr(s) HCSSA Administrator/Alternate Summary:The pros and cons of working with MCOs in and out of network. HCSSA Topic(s) Addressed: §558.259[d][4]agency responsibilities §558.260[a][3]basic principles of management in a licensed health-related setting §558.260[a][7]financial management Faculty:Spears, Jan Program Description: This program presents the pros and cons of working with MCOs in and out of network. As traditional payor sources implement payment reductions, new payment models or move exclusively to Managed Care, home health agencies are once again looking at the best way to work within the Managed Care arena. Some MCOs can pick and choose their provider networks based upon geographical area, STARs reporting, and pricing models. Medicaid MCOs typically offer below market value contracts. Although the MCO must follow the home health rules, the payer can establish additional requirements such as prior authorization, timeframes for physician signatures, etc. that can be more stringent than the traditional counterpart. The avenues for appeals are cumbersome and often leave the provider “holding the bag.” Learn how to package your agency for quality, cost and satisfaction in advance of seeking contracts with the MCOs in your area. Delivering care in accordance with MCO requirements requires process modifcation for order development, authorization management and billing. In addition, the presenter touches on best practice processes to improve coverage and reduce days outstanding on your claims. Presentation Date: 11.15.2016 Learning Outcomes(s): Participants will actively engage in the activity and indicate an intent to change or enhance their practice by delivering care in accordance with Managed Care Organization (MCO) requirements while incorporating best documentation practices in order to ensure coverage and reduce days outstanding on agency claims. About the Presenter:

What’s now and what’s new? Presentation Info: TAHC&H Event Administrator Conference | Rich-Media Presentation Capture | Online On-Demand Access Presentation Date | November 8, 2023 Program Description: What’s now and what’s new? The TNC is currently 17.5% of the Total Performance Score of VBP, but CMS is implementing drastic changes. Even though CMS is omitting the TNC from its programs and replacing it with the Discharge Function score, the TNC scores are still important through payment year 2026. Now is the time to ramp up for the first performance year for Discharge Function, so learn what your plan should be for 2024. ACH and ED Use claims data currently comprise 35% of your Total Performance Scores. Even though your ACH and ED Use scores are being jettisoned in favor of the new PPH, the ACH and ED Use will still impact your payment until 2026. New to VBP are the PPH and the Discharged to Community (claims-based) quality measures, which together will comprise 35% and will require some adjustments in your Performance Improvement Programs. PPH will include hospitalizations (both ACH and LTCH) and observation stays. The DTC measure will include readmissions for up to 31 days after discharge. Lisa discusses what actions can be taken now to improve those numbers. However, despite having large amounts of data, providers are generally faced with the challenge of not knowing how to leverage the data beyond basic reporting. Moreover, in the home and community care sector in particular, visit, operational information, and clinical data is often stored in paper format -- or if is it digital, resides in siloed databases. These system deficiencies make it near impossible to gain a holistic view of operations and eliminates the ability to “pivot” data. The catalyst for this change is to be obsessed about data-driven decision making. The rise of business intelligence (BI) is unlocking actionable insights that will dramatically improve home and community care organizations. Program Learning Outcome: Participants will be able to cite how to leverage data beyond basic reporting and data driven decision making and describe how these insights could dramatically improve home and community care organizations. TAHC&H Faculty/Presenter: Brady Murphy, Sales & Marketing, AlayaCare About the Presenter:
Brady Murphy is an accomplished marketer, speaker, and entrepreneur, he has been part of two start-ups in the technology field. HCSSA Topic(s) Addressed: §558.259[d][4]agency responsibilities §558.260[a][3]basic principles of management in a licensed health-related setting Program Description: The Public Health Emergency (PHE) due to the COVID-19 Pandemic lasted much longer than anyone anticipated or desired. Many regulations were adapted to assist agencies as they attempted to continue providing care in extraordinary circumstances. As the industry attempts to return to more normal operations we have to wonder if it will it ever be truly “normal” again? Do we really want it to be? Some aspects, such as the ability to work remotely, have boosted employee satisfaction and increased productivity. Is bringing everyone back to in person working situations the best plan? Should we have clinicians back in the office for education, meetings and case conferences? Will changes impact my current staffing challenges, and how? This session will help you inspire your team, through culture and leadership, to begin the process of defining what the “new normal” looks and feels like for your organization. Sherry has a strong sense of community service, as evidenced by her volunteer status as an athletic trainer at Citrus High School for over 13 years, as well as her membership with Rotary International that exemplifies service above self. Sherry received her athletic training certification from Valdosta State University (GA) in 1989, and her Masters in Exercise and Sport Science degree from the University of Florida in 1991.
