Kurt Baumgartel is Executive Vice President of Home-Based Care for Compassus’ care continuum across Home Health, Home Infusion Palliative and Hospice. He joined Compassus in 2020 at a pivotal period of growth for the company as Compassus and Ascension became partners in Ascension at Home. Baumgartel has extensive experience leading home health and hospice organizations gained over more than 20 years in leadership in the health care industry. Previously Baumgartel was chief operating officer of Evolution Health and Ascension at Home. Before that he held executive positions that include president of Allegheny Health Network’s Home Health and Hospice division, president and chief operating officer of Celtic Healthcare, and president of subsidiary Celtic Living Assistance Services. Duane Blackwell has been in home health since August, 1997 when he was hired as CEO of Thompson Home Health, a multi-provider Louisiana-based home health company. Duane’s previous career in commercial banking seemed a good fit for what was to be a tectonic shift in the way home health was delivered. In 2003, he assisted in the successful sale of Thompson to an equity investment firm, staying on as CEO for five years following the sale. For home health (including skilled care and PAS), it has been the third most commonly cited violation coming in behind management responsibilities of both the supervising nurse and the administrator. Usually one or both of those is cited along with the failure to timely report. Almost without exception, there are penalties assessed with each failure to timely report. At times, the failure will result in license revocation. More times than not the failure to report is due to agency staff misunderstanding this obligation or misunderstanding what constitutes an allegation of ANE. By examining these common misunderstandings and mistakes you will learn practical steps to avoid them. There are several reasons for this. First, many times management staff have the misunderstanding that they must make a judgment call as to whether or not an allegation has been made. Second, middle management staff and delivery staff usually fail to understand how to dignify an allegation estimate. This presentation examines final orders from the Texas Health and Human Services commission dealing with allegations of abuse, neglect and exploitation. By examining these cases, as opposed to discussing a hypothetical story, the viewer will gain a better understanding of what goes wrong when an allegation of abuse, neglect and exploitation is not timely reported to the authorities. You will learn about revalidation including if changes are needed, they must be done prior to starting revalidation. Furthermore, you will learn the difference between Certified home health and licensed home health processes and gain helpful tips including that providers must complete their revalidation enrollment before the end of their enrollment period. Providers can revalidate their enrollment up to 90 days before their deadlines through Provider Enrollment on the Portal (PEP). If changes need to be done, start early, early, early.
